Ms. Hsia says in the article:

小徒弟 says in Response 4:

(1) It's great to see Ms. Hsia comes back.
From the very self-disciplined nature of Ms. Hsia,
I can imagine the challenge you must have been facing,
forcing you to take a break from this blog for a while.
But I am glad to see that at least in the end of the above article,
     the tone becomes brighter/more colorful.

(2) Before finally coming to the current dream place of my career,
almost every two to three years I had to pack myself up and
move on to the next place.

In a big or world-class institute, people come and people go.
That is the rule, and no one seems to care at all.
Or, if one does too much, likely he/she cannot survive.

Constantly as a new member in a new/competitive place,
part of what served me as words to live by has been
exactly what 小徒弟 says in Response 4.

That gave me at least something very concrete/realistic
to focus on and try to achieve.
     And usually, it did work!

(3) Of course, human issues like what Ms. Hsia is dealing with
(fuzzy-type logic is involved) are much more complicated
than what I am doing (only 0/1-type logic is involved).
There are so many gray/fuzzy areas/regions.
Yet, life itself is a journey of learning and self-improving.
As long as one has already done one's best, then that's it.

(4) From Ms.Hsia's article ``... ..."

I recall that there are a few articles of Ms.Hsia
in your other blog, Xletter, on your trip to Shanghai, China.
This late summer I was giving lectures at Zhejiang University,
     Hangzhou.
This is the first time I stepped on my cultural mother-land.
I cannot deny an inward excitement throughout my stay there.
I used to liking to read history (as a quiet way to understand
humans, though I hated to memorize historical facts) and,
hence, took three hours (5am-8am) in an early morning,
walking around Xi-hu (i.e. the West Lake) and crossing Su-ti.
(This historially well-known lake is within walking distance
      to Zhejiang University, Yu-chuan campus.)

These figures/characters from Song Dynasty seem most natural
to come to our mind particularly at Xi-hu.
Like these figures, sooner or later we will also all diminish
    and finally vanish someday.
Thinking about this, one may start to wonder
what is the point of all the fuss.

Well, I have no answer to this.
Perhaps it is because we sense that, after all,
we are luckier than other groups of people in the society
and hence cannot deny a certain responsibility to them,
    however vague it is.
Perhaps we sense that there is still hope,
    despite so many sorrows.
Only when we somehow fulfill that responsibility
can we leave this world with a peaceful mind
without regretting that we have not tried our best to improve it
(after we have developed ourselves well - a responsibility
     to our own selves).

Best regards to Ms. Hsia, your family, and readers of this blog.
                                 --- Sincerely, CHL, 2008/10/04.

"I am ashamed of my emptiness," said the Word to the Work.
"I know how poor I am when I see you," said the Work to the Word.
-- Rabindranath Tagore
